Background of the Study

Cloud storage has revolutionized the way organizations store and access data, offering scalability, cost-efficiency, and remote access. However, as the reliance on cloud storage grows, so does the need to secure sensitive data from cyber-attacks. Traditional encryption methods used for securing data in cloud storage systems are vulnerable to future quantum computing threats, which can break current cryptographic algorithms in a fraction of the time it takes classical computers.

Quantum-resistant encryption techniques, which are designed to withstand attacks from quantum computers, offer a solution to this security concern. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), responsible for regulating and developing IT policy in Nigeria, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the security of digital infrastructure. This study aims to design and implement a quantum-resistant cloud storage system at NITDA to protect sensitive data against potential quantum computing-based cyber threats.

Statement of the Problem

The growing use of cloud storage services has introduced new risks related to data security. Existing encryption techniques are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the capabilities of quantum computers, which could potentially decrypt sensitive data stored in the cloud. As the Nigerian government continues to digitize its operations, it is essential to develop secure cloud storage systems that are resistant to quantum attacks. This research seeks to address the challenges of securing data in cloud environments by designing and implementing a quantum-resistant cloud storage system for NITDA.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a quantum-resistant cloud storage system that can secure sensitive data against quantum computing attacks.

  2. To implement the quantum-resistant cloud storage system within NITDA’s digital infrastructure.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the quantum-resistant cloud storage system in ensuring data security.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum-resistant encryption be implemented to secure cloud storage systems from quantum computing threats?

  2. What challenges are involved in implementing quantum-resistant cloud storage systems in government agencies like NITDA?

  3. How effective is a quantum-resistant cloud storage system in preventing data breaches compared to traditional encryption methods?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it offers a practical solution to the pressing issue of data security in cloud environments. By implementing a quantum-resistant cloud storage system, NITDA can ensure the security of sensitive government data against future quantum attacks. The findings of this study can also serve as a guideline for other government agencies and organizations looking to safeguard their data in the face of advancing quantum technologies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of a quantum-resistant cloud storage system at NITDA. Limitations include the challenges associated with integrating new quantum-resistant algorithms into existing cloud infrastructure and the limited availability of quantum computing resources in Nigeria.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Quantum-Resistant Encryption: Cryptographic methods that are specifically designed to resist attacks from quantum computers.

  2. Cloud Storage: A system for storing data on remote servers accessed via the internet, as opposed to local storage devices.

  3. National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA): The Nigerian government agency responsible for regulating and overseeing the development of information technology in the country.
